How To Build a Routine That Works Anywhere In The World

14th November 2024

Creating a routine that works no matter where you are when you’re a digital nomad (or even if you just want to work while you’re traveling for a short break), but there’s an unpredictability when it comes to travel (which is part of the fun, of course) that can make coming up with a routine a bit tricky, to say the least. However, if working while you’re traveling, whether it’s for a weekend away or for months at a time, is something you really want and need to do, don’t worry; there are some handy tips we can give you that will help to build a routine that works anywhere in the world and that means you’ll get everything on your to-do list done (including seeing the sights). Read on to find out more.

Be Aware Of Time Zones

Time zones can be a bit of an issue for digital nomads, especially if you move from one to another fairly quickly – you can be working on the East Coast of America one day and then finishing a project in Southeast Asia the next, and all kinds of other variations on that theme. The point is, there are going to be times when time itself changes, and that can easily catch you out if you’re not careful.

The best thing to do is to make sure you know precisely what time zone you’re traveling to at any given point, and factor that into your working hours. If a deadline has to be met, the last thing you’ll want to do is miss it because you forget the time changed when you went from one country to another, especially if you were counting on that contract to fund the rest of your travels.

Use The Right Apps

One of the best ways to get into a good routine is to use one (or more) of the many apps for digital nomads that you can find once you start searching around. What you’ll want to have in place are apps that are designed to help you keep your focus and be ready for anything when it comes to the work you’ve got to do, and there are all kinds of things that will fit the bill.

One app that could be very useful is a VPN, which means you can use public wifi but keep all your details completely protected – that could save a lot of problems, and you can use it no matter where you go on your journey. Plus, using apps that can help you stay in communication with your clients can also be incredibly useful, as you can keep them up-to-date about how you’re getting on, and answer their questions if they need to ask any.

Build Buffer Times

Traveling days, language barriers, bad or slow wifi, wanting to see the sights (which is why you’re traveling in the first place)… all of these things – and plenty more – can throw your carefully planned schedule into chaos, and just one small thing can cause problems everywhere else.

That’s why you need to build buffer times into those schedules to ensure you can handle anything that comes your way with plenty of time to meet your deadlines and keep your clients happy at the same time. These buffers won’t just mean you get everything done, but they’ll also stop you from being so stressed, which means you can enjoy your trip a lot more.
